The world of Kimura Etsu's Buddhist paintings

Etsu Kimura’s Buddhist paintings are brilliant works with exquisite color combinations using water-based paints on thin silk called "ekinu".

In her works, which pursue the beauty and severity of the boundless Buddha, you can appreciate the expression of Buddha’s mouth, full of compassion.

Kimura's Buddhist paintings transcend the faith of the Japanese heart and go beyond sects, and are painted as "Buddhist paintings that bring comfort and peace to the heart" and "Buddhist paintings that give people the strength to live".

A message from the Artist

Creating Buddhist paintings brings joy and a sense of accomplishment to my daily life.

After my husband passed away, I was searching for something to do to live the rest of my life alone, and I fell in love with painting Buddhist paintings. My encounters with many Buddhist statues have brought me tranquility in both body and mind, and I have received the greatest joy and inspiration.

When I pray and move my brush, I become one with the Buddha, imagine the world of the Pure Land, and express the Buddha while imagining a beautiful world full of brilliant colors.

During the precious time I spend facing the Buddha every day, I feel the invisible Buddha's manifestation, which sometimes brings me to tears and sometimes gives me courage.

Thankfully, I received many letters of comfort from visitors to my exhibition. I feel deeply moved that the voiceless voice of the Buddha has been conveyed to everyone through my Buddhist paintings. I am truly grateful.

As long as I live, I would like to put true joy into every stroke of my brush, sew kindness into every stitch, and be full of spirit.

With gratitude, Gassho
