Long ago, there were two wealthy brothers who provided all living beings with excellent medicines to relieve them from illness.
The elder brother was called Bodhisattva Yakuo and the younger brother was called Bodhisattva Yakujo, and it is written that Shaka Nyorai told Bodhisattva Maitreya that in the future they would attain Buddhahood, and the elder brother would be called Pure Eye Buddha and the younger brother would be called Pure Storage Buddha.
In their previous life, Bodhisattva Pleasure View was born after wearing exquisite incense and anointing himself with perfumed oil and burning himself in front of the Buddha of the Lamp for 1,200 years, and was reborn as Bodhisattva Yakuo, who made offerings for 84,000 pagodas and came to be called Bodhisattva Yakuo.
The attendants of Shaka Nyorai are said to be Manjusri and Samantabhadra, but in ancient times, the attendants were Yakuo and Yakujo Bosatsu, as seen at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, and Yakuo and Yakujo Bosatsu are also included among the 25 bodhisattvas in the Yakushi Nyorai Eight Great Bodhisattvas and the Raigo-zu of Amida Nyorai.
There is also a legend that if you carry a gourd as a talisman, Yakuo will trap evil spirits in the gourd and prevent disasters.
The sutras say that with the appearance of great compassion and salvation, he wears a wonderful vine, heavenly robe and garland, with fine cotton around his waist and a wonderful red twill skirt, and with a magnificent appearance and beautiful color, his body shines brightly all over, he sits on a jeweled lotus, and resides peacefully in the moon-shaped sea...
