It is said that when Zen Master Dogen returned from China, he encountered a storm on the way and recited the Kannon Sutra.
It is said that he appeared at that time, and the Zen master's boat safely landed at Kawajiri in Kumamoto.

The figure of the Kannon sitting on a lotus petal and floating on the water is also the Kannon who saves us from drowning, as the Kannon Sutra says, "Even if we are adrift in a big water, if we chant the name of Kannon, we will find shallow water."
It is said that Zen Master Dogen carved a Kannon statue on the plank of his boat and enshrined it at the place where he landed.
